The “Coming to America” series at Vernon Area Public Library explores these ideas through books, lectures, and a crowd-sourced community project, all taking place online.
The series is anchored by a selection of books translated from Yiddish and set at the turn of the 20th century and following World War II—stories with elements many of us will recognize from our own family’s immigration stories. The books and related programs dig into questions of identity, assimilation, language, cuisine, and generational change. An oral history project called “First Day in America” provides a platform for you to preserve and share your story.

The Yiddish Book Center’s “Coming to America” Reading Groups for Public Libraries is made possible by a generous gift from Sharon Karmazin. The series includes the discussion of three books of Yiddish literature in translation and one book related to an immigrant community served by the library.
